Selling Christmas Trees As a Fundraiser
Christmas trees have successfully been sold to raise funds for various organizations for many years. Christmas trees make a great fundraising product because many people are moving away from food based fundraising, Christmas Trees offer a good profit margin, and they are relatively easy to market because many people plan on buying them anyway. They are also eco-friendly as they are grown on large tree farms and each year the harvested trees are reseeded to begin another growing cycle.
There are two different ways to use Christmas trees as a fundraiser, one is the traditional tree lot, the other is by pre-selling the trees using a brochure, much like you would many other products, such as Christmas wreaths, or cookie dough. A traditional lot can be a great way to maximize your profits. Many organizations claim to use a tree lot to fund all of their year around activities and boast revenue in the tens of thousands, depending on how large of operation they run yearly.
A Church, school, or group makes a great Christmas Tree fundraising organization, because they have many natural advantages. Usually there are available facilities that would make for a great area to set up the lot, and they naturally have many members who are active in the organization and would be willing to help out in some way. There are many things to consider before deciding on a Christmas Tree lot, such as responsibilities, expenses, advertising methods, staffing and security. Another idea that has been catching on for the past few years is that of pre-selling the Christmas trees using a brochure, or some sort of visual aid.
How pre-selling works is that people go out and promote the fundraiser and take orders and collect payment by a predetermined day. On that day the order is placed and the money is sent in to the tree grower who has agreed to have the shipper deliver the trees on a certain day, so that the trees can be distributed in a timely manner for the Holiday Season. Once the trees arrive at the destination, fundraising members help unload the truck and then either deliver the trees, or have their customers come and pick them up themselves. The advantages to this method are that there is no financial risk in having unsold trees, there are no staffing hours of the tree lot, and the trees are usually shipped immediately after being cut, so the quality is incredible, (due to not being subjected to frozen temps, or blistering heat on a lot). The trees can be arranged to be delivered about the same time as the big discount chain stores are setting out their trees, but growers will ship their premium trees to fundraisers, as they have been pre-paid for, and discount chain stores do not pay for their trees until the store computer determines they have been rung up at a cash register, sometimes at lower prices due to poor quality, meaning less profit for the tree grower.
There are many things to consider when deciding what types of fundraisers would work best for your organization, and many groups have successfully used Christmas Trees as a great way to bring the community together and raise much needed funds.
