Planting Grass Seed In A Yard
Choose a type of grass seed to plant that will look good with your existing grass and is right for the conditions in your yard. Pay attention to how much shade, sun and water your yard gets. Also look at the color and texture of your existing grass so that you can find a good match. You should make sure the type of grass you choose will grow well in your planting zone.
Kill all of the weeds before you plant grass seed in your yard. You won?t be able to kill them for awhile afterwards because most weed killers will harm newly planted grass. Use a broad leaf herbicide several weeks before you want to plant grass seed so that it has plenty of time to work. Don?t use a season long or pre-emergent weed killer because it will keep the grass seeds from sprouting.
Mow your grass with your lawn mower set to it?s lowest setting. Remove any thatch, rocks or sticks from your yard.
Plant the grass seed in your yard following the directions on the package. Spread the grass seed thickly enough that you will get good coverage, but not so thick that the seedlings will crowd each other out. Use a garden rake to work the seeds into the dirt. Grass seeds need good contact with the soil in order to germinate.
Water the seeds lightly so that you don?t wash them away. Continue to keep them moist until the newly planted grass seeds are well established. If the weather is hot or dry, you may need to water more than once a day.
